It can be a bit daunting trying to light a charcoal block for the
first time!
Questions like... “What the hell is this?” and “What
the hell do I do with it?!?”
We’ve all been there – unless we’ve been lucky enough
to have someone with more experience on our
side.
Here’s the no-nonsense method of tackling the “lighting of
the charcoal” for your incense burning...
- Ensure your charcoals are stored in a warm, dry environment and are
completely covered in foil.
- Carefully remove a charcoal briquette from the foil packet and hold
charcoal with tweezers (that don't close so tightly!) or fingers (but
beware - the briquette gets hot!).
- Make sure concave side of briquette is underneath – this means
the topside has a depression with a rim around the edge.
- Light the charcoal with a steady candle flame – the charcoal
will begin to spit and spurt and glow orange… continue to hold
the briquette over the flame so half of the circumference is lit.
- This is now ready to be placed within your censer or thurible which
should have a base of dry sand or dirt.
- Wait until the charcoal has stopped spitting and spurting and the
rim is turning white.
- Sprinkle a teaspoon of your desired granular incense over the hot
charcoal.
- Relax and enjoy the aroma!

TIP #1: If your sand or dirt-base within your thurible
is the least bit damp – this will put out your charcoal!
TIP #2: If your censer or thurible is big enough, you
can always light 2 or 3 charcoals and REALLY get
some incense going!
TIP #3: If your charcoal roll becomes damp - the outer
briquettes will probably won't work as well, try a block closer to the
middle.
TIP #4: Make sure you have sufficient ventilation of
fresh air!
